The sun paid no heed to how warm the rays made his coat, almost hot to the touch, except for around his head and neck, but even there it felt warm. A little too warm for his taste, but that was just another reason for him to take his steps down to the water to get a cool drink from the icy water. At a natural bend in the river the flow was calmer, and almost created a little pool, before it continued flowing down. That was where it would be easiest to drink, but also a little bit risky, since the water was thinning the ice at those openings. The sun was also hot, both on him and on the ice.
The moment his pink and white labrums hit the water, the cold feeling of the water refreshed him as it went down his throat, although he kept as far away from the thin edges as possible. He would not fancy to go through the ice if he could choose not to. It would be awfully cold and a pain in the behind to try and get dry again. But the water felt lifegiving at the moment, it cooled him down, and suddenly the sun didn't feel too hot on his back, it didn't feel to hot around the pink skin of his muzzle and eyes.
Further away, in the distance, he could tell there were some horses, none that he knew, and none that concerned him. No one he cared about really, but he still kept an eye on them, forever watching as always. Every now and then he lifted his head, took a glance around with clipping ears before returning to the water. Most likely every horse here were a loner, just like him, or for some other reason were travelling or living in this more neutral place, where no herd resided. But then again - he could always be wrong. He wasn't always right, and he knew that all too well.
