The steely mare watched anxiously as Jabari swam further away from the shore. Her heart was still racing in her chest and adrenaline coursed through her veins. Vita Nova's nostrils flared as she sucked in each and every breath, as she tried to bring herself back down from such a heightened, anxious state. Silently, she was thankful Jabari made it out when he did. He was lucky - and she was lucky. The altercation could have been much worse.
Vita Nova honestly wasn't sure what to expect when she pleaded with the great grey stallion not to hurt her nephew. She'd seen Warsaw in similar angry states, but she was never sure if when push came to shove, would he listen to her. It took some serious coaxing, but in the end, he did. He let Jabari go with merely a scratch. Vita Nova knew she owed him for that. But this newfound - and recently tested - knowledge also made her realize the power she truly had.
The mare's brilliant blue eyes remained trained on the horizon until Jabari's head and neck was indecipherable against the sun and the sky. She breathed one last heavy sigh, and looked to Neon again. She offered her a sheepish grin, which devolved into a defeated look across her face. "Glad that's over." She said, sort of foolishly, just trying to fill the air. Vita Nova flicked her tail across her rump nervously and pined away for something to say that would make her sound more worthy of her lead mare title. She was supposed to quell fears and inspire others in times like these, right? Her thoughts felt so garbled. And she couldn't shake this sinking feeling of shame. It would be a long time, if ever, before Vita Nova would be able to forget that look of disappointment in her nephew's eyes.
"Again, I'm so sorry you got dragged into this, Neon." Vita Nova finally says, in an attempt to reiterate her feelings. "My family, well... it's complicated that I'm here, is all."
