Live through this lie [Ruger, Persephone, Evren >]

Was I left behind?
Tell me, tell me I survived.

Three strikes was three too many. The attacks on the Prairie in the last few seasons had begun to take a toll on my body. I was no longer a young stallion, and I could feel it in my bones and in my joints, especially after my most recent scuffle against Rougaru. Something about this recent onslaught of attacks didn't sit well in my gut. Warsaw's interest in Vita Nova was one thing. But Cullen and Rougaru? I didn't know either of them by name or face before they showed up on my shore, nor did I have any interest in what they did around the islands, so long as it didn't affect my family. But their brash intrusions changed all of that.

I had asked Ruger to tag along to meet with my longest standing ally - my neighbor, Persephone. I was eager to see her after her captivity in the Inlet, and learn if her herd had faced any similar attacks or intrusions lately. If so perhaps it was time to brainstorm ways on how we could better protect our borders, and the island of Luthien as a whole. I would be lying if I said I wan't keen on seeing Evren again too, after visit to the Prairie recently. I found myself revisiting the recent memory of Evren in quieter moments. I'd catch myself aimlessly daydreaming, and be startled by my own subconscious thoughts. It wasn't that long ago that I'd hoped I'd never see that mare again in my lifetime. And now that she was my neighbor, and by proxy, an ally well... Perhaps things had changed.

We left the herd with Jabari in charge, and strolled down the familiar path through the reeds until the hills began to lay flat and a canopy of trees appeared overhead. The air here was significantly more damp, given the shade. It was always interesting to me to see how vastly different one piece of land could be, compared to the next. Ruger and I had been fairly out of touch in recent weeks, since we brought Celestria back to the herd and Jabari's outburst. But I appreciated everything he did for our family. I'm not sure if the Paririe would be as robust and as successful if it wasn't for him.

"So what do you know about this Cullen character?" I ask as we walk between the pine and evergreen trees. It had been many years since I stepped foot into the Lagoon and I hoped it would be many more years before I'd do it again. The memory of Kasabian's death still haunted me. I now associated the smells of the saltwater and the mud there with my dead brother. But perhaps Ruger was more in touch than I was.

As we cross the border into Persephone's territory, I issue a low and long whinny, announcing our arrival. We slow our pace as we enter a small valley - a cutout between the trees - and wait for the Queen of the Forest to find us.
