“We’re being watched.”
Jetta lifted her head and looked in the direction her son had indicated. Off in the distance, at the edge of the trees, was a pale stallion staring at them, his silhouette sylph-like against the dark backdrop of the forest. Jetta’s belly fluttered. Could it be…? The stallion was too far away for them to make out details of his appearance, however, and he made no move to approach them. For a few moments, Jetta and Wade did nothing but stare back at him, as if they were all playing a game of chicken, waiting to see who would make the first move.
“Is it… him?” Wade asked, and Jetta knew who he meant. She did not need to see the stallion closely to know it was not Wade’s sire, Zevulun, however. Zevulun was a vivacious and friendly stallion, and would not have delayed in coming to meet them.
“No,” Jetta murmured, and they spent a few more moments watching the stallion, while Jetta wondered why he did not approach. Was this not his territory? Was he a wanderer, like them? There was only one way to find out. Whoever he was, he might still know something useful.
After a brief exchange with Wade, the two of them decided to approach. They came no faster than a brisk walk, with their heads high and ears pricked, so the stranger would know they meant no harm. As they came closer, Jetta could see that he was most definitely not Zevulun - his build was wrong, his color was just off slightly, he was perhaps a hair shorter, and he was much younger than Zevulun would have been now. Nonetheless, there was enough of a resemblance to Zevulun that Jetta felt her heart racing as the distance between them closed. Whoever this stranger was, he was a handsome one.
“Hello,” Jetta said with a smile. “My name is Jetta, and this is my son, Wade.” She gestured to the stallion beside her, who nodded and also offered a smile, though his was a little more reserved. “Do you live here?”
