EVREN

When Tarek asked to come with her, it took a moment for Evren’s sleep-deprived mind to process what he had said. When she finally did, her gut tensed with momentary panic.

“No,” she blurted out, then softened her tone. “You should stay here with Persephone and help guard the herd while I’m gone. It’s not just Warsaw we have to worry about; it’s the Lagoon, too.” She did not tell Tarek her other, smaller reason for not wanting him to come with her: she did not want her alone time with Shamwari encroached upon.

Then, almost all at once, there were horses materializing out of the dark all around them. Evren could hardly believe her eyes when Indira appeared first, and she stood with an open mouth, frozen, as Indira crashed into her and enveloped her in a warm embrace. Then Evren remembered that Tarek had said he’d brought her here, and some of her shock melted into joy.

A bright, if tired, smile brightened Evren’s face. “Big sister,” she replied, “Speak of the devil. Tarek was just telling me he’d dragged you into this little mess of ours.” Evren gave her nephew a pointed glance to see if he had picked up on her jab.

Before they could say any more, however, two more horses materialized out of the dark, making Evren nearly jump out of her skin. She did not recognize the first horse, a young mare who kept close to Indira’s side. The second, however, was none other than Yngvar, who seemed to be just as perplexed as the rest of them.

Evren blinked, then chuckled. “Well, this has turned into quite the midnight gathering.”
