With Shaydowfax gone, Ylva felt her nerves intensify yet again. She quietly agreed to Liland’s offer, and as he led her and the foals further inland, they were quickly joined by two other young ones. Ylva’s heart immediately warmed with relief, for she had been worried that her children would have no playmates here.
“Of course,” Ylva replied to them, with a quick side-glance at Liland to see if he agreed. “Just don’t go too far, please.” Especially not when Warsaw was right across the border. Once the gang of young ones had run off, Ylva looked back to Liland and found herself barely able to meet his eye. He was so handsome, a dream come true… but Warsaw had traumatized her, and to be alone with a strange stallion now was no easy feat. Ylva felt as if she was balanced on a precipice, as if the slightest breeze might dictate whether she fell into the pits of distrust and despair or remained rooted firmly on earth. “Are they yours?” Ylva finally asked in a quiet voice, indicating the two foals that had run off with her children. “They’re beautiful.
