PERSEPHONE

As the girl gave her name and mentioned her mother, the memory came flooding back to Persephone. A smile slipped across her lips. She had developed a soft spot for Macabre during her time in the Lagoon, she felt momentarily foolish for forgetting her daughter, who she had delivered her mother’s message to at the time.

“Oh, of course, I remember you and your mother. It is good to see you. You have grown much since then, Wasp – I remember you as little more than a child.” She paused a moment, her dark eyes drifting over the young woman’s body. It was strong now, and marked in places – evidence she had fought often. “Much has changed since then.”

The sound and scent of others approaching drew Persephone’s attention then, and she turned her head. Macabre emerged from the trees, as if the magnetic pull of fate had sensed her daughter’s presence. Persephone returned her smile warmly, moving aside a little in order to allow the mare to reach her daughter.

“I am so glad to see some happiness for a change,” she murmured as she watched.

There was a sense of pride almost in her chest, as she looked at the little family before her, although she had not created it herself. Persephone was honoured to have been their protector and guardian in the Forest for as long as they remained.
