To Ylva’s surprise, she had only a few moments alone with Rayna. She tensed as none other than the Fjord mare approached, but Ylva’s expression was open and curious. The Fjord mare, who introduced herself as Zjeena, was confident and direct in her greeting. Had Ylva been more familiar with her, she might have appreciated this, but now it caught her off guard, and for a moment she wondered if Zjeena had an ulterior motive in approaching her.
Ylva hesitated, swallowed against a lump in her throat, then smiled. Remember your manners, she heard her mother say. “Yes,” she replied, her voice quiet. “It’s lovely to officially meet you, Zjeena.” Though Zjeena had arrived in the bay after Ylva, her confidence and familiarity - as well as the argument with Liland Ylva had witnessed - made Ylva wonder, not for the first time, if Zjeena was not new to the bay after all. For a moment Ylva’s gaze flitted between Rayna and Zjeena, noting the similarities in their appearance and wondering if Rayna was Zjeena’s daughter. But no, she decided, Rayna was not quite the perfect mix of Liland and Zjeena - as the twins that had arrived in the bay with Zjeena were - and besides, there was no easy familiarity between them that a mother and daughter would have shared. Ylva opened her mouth, then closed it. She was dying to ask what had happened between Liland and Zjeena, but she had no intention of prying so soon, especially not with Rayna here. Her mind flipped between a hundred different conversation starters, all questions about Zjeena, but rejected them all. Nothing felt appropriate, given the current atmosphere in the bay. Finally she settled on something. “Rayna and I were just talking about my children. You may have seen them around - there’s the twins, and then my youngest, Torsten.
