Shamwari’s call was like a punch to Evren’s gut. She whipped her head around to see that the red stallion had emerged from the sea and was waiting back on the beach. Even at this distance, his body language was clear: he was pissed. Evren’s heart began to race. She had already known he was angry with her before they’d left the inlet, but part of her had hoped that the swim would cool his temper, or that he would go straight home and they could (hopefully) talk things through several days later, with Persephone present ensure things did not get out of hand.
Evren was exhausted from all that had happened, and the bulk of her anger had dissipated. But if he wanted a fight, he would get one.
After exchanging a knowing glance with Persephone, Evren slipped away into the trees at a slow trot. Her expression was guarded as she approached Shamwari, and she offered no smile, not even a greeting. She simply waited for what was to come. Thankfully, she did not have to wait long. As Shamwari berated her, Evren set her jaw and stared back at him with her head high and an expression that indicated she felt no guilt whatsoever over her actions. As he carried on, she could feel slow waves of cold rage lapping at her.
“You’re a fucking idiot, Shamwari,” she finally replied, her voice hard like flint. “Your family was already at risk - or did you really think the stallion that tried to take Vita Nova against her will, that disrespected Persephone over and over, that harried our herd, stole our members, and now apparently raped Hannah was going to play nice with you? You’re blind. You’re the blindest idiot I’ve ever known. All I did back there was speak the truth. There was never any chance for peace. Monsters like him aren’t bargained with, they’re stomped out. I’m shocked you let Vita Nova stay with him this long. Shocked. Who knows what he's done to her already?”
Evren shook her head with disgust.
