Her nicker caught his attention rather quickly. He was already thinking of her so it seemed fitting she would show up just as he was out looking for her. He turns around to face the tall blue roan mare that stood not too far away. A smile brightens his features as his cream-colored legs guide him closer. He didn't recognize anything was different at first. He was just happy she was home. "I have to tell you something." She says, with her tail tucking between her legs and her eyes full of guilt. He was confused, unsure of what could be wrong. There was no way he could be mad at her. There was no way the timid Evie could hurt him.
His nostrils flare as she speaks. Ruger's scent fills his nose as she explains she went to see Ruger and what happened. Was this all his fault? Was he a fool for giving her this freedom? Then, BAM! He felt a swift kick in the heart as he took a step backward. His shoulders begin to rise with the fast breathes he was now taking in. She looks away. "I did say you had your freedom." He speaks in a whisper. Moments of silence pass where he just stares at her with a blank expression. He was frozen until she starts to speak again and his body jerks up as if she had frightened him. "Evie, I..." She wanted to go back to him. Back to Ruger.
At first, it was like he hadn't heard her. "I have a lot of feelings for you." His lower lip trembles. "I love you, but I can't see you hurting and missing the one you love." Finally, his honey-brown eyes leave her. He looks to the world behind her as tears start to swell in his eyes. "Go." At first he says it normally, but then he turns his back to her. He could still smell her scent strong on his nose. "Just go!" He screams with one of his front hooves stomping the ground. It was only seconds after that he springs into a gallop further inland, never looking back. |
