Zjeena avoids Liland for the same reason he avoids her. There is nothing she has to say that won't turn into another fight. It was hard enough for the rest of the herd seeing them fight once. They don't need to see it again.
Whatever her conflict with Liland, Zjeena cares about the herd. She continues to carry out her duties as lead mare, despite the restrictions placed upon her by Liland. Another mare might retaliate to such treatment by abandoning their post. Afterall, if he can restrict her so, then she is not a queen, and certainly not his equal. Why should she assume the responsibilities of such a title if she shall reap none of the benefits? But Zjeena cannot bring herself to behave like that. Her position as queen was accepted, not for her own ambitions, but for the herd, and for what she has to offer them. Her herd is her family, bound by blood or kinship it doesn't matter.
Zjeena spent much of the morning digging through the snow in the meadow, exposing hidden nourishment for her children, or for anyone else to browse. She then took her leave, patrolling the varied terrain, keeping keen senses alert for any sign of danger. This winter afternoon brings brilliant, clear skies. The sun warms their backs, despite the chill in the air. It's a great day for a walk, and she encounters nothing of alarm in her travels. Her spirits lift, inspiring the spring in her step and the light in her eyes.
She is just returning when she climbs the sleeps slope behind Liland. She notes his watchful form surveying the herd, and her heart sinks. She gives him a wide berth and attempts to stride quietly past on her way to join the herd below. There's no way he won't see her, but perhaps if she avoids eye contact, he won't engage her. She keeps her eyes fixed on where she is going, and does her best to ignore him.
