She was still so much different from the aggressive mare he remembered in the Meadow. She was quiet, her weight shifting as if she were unsure of herself. Concern flashed in his eyes and for a moment, he wondered if he had broke something in her mentally when he decided to breed her right then. He had been so sure she could handle it. She'd certainly handled herself with no problem when it came to Everglow. She finally said that the journey would have been harder had she waited. He tilted his head a little, unsure if she meant because she hated to leave her friends and family or because of the changing seasons and her possible pregnancy. Finally he nodded. "Probably so. Luckily, the winter isn't as harsh in the Desert, but the water still gets pretty cold when you swim out far enough."

He wondered what kind of climate she was used to. She made it seem like she would be right at home in a Desert landscape but he could be wrong. His gaze searched her chiseled features, gauging her reaction to his words on whether she was just talking about the weather or something different. He was sure she had her thoughts on how to get out of her promise to him, how to stay away from the Desert and how to avoid him. But unlike Leonid, she decided to face her issues head on and that said a lot about her. She gave her word and she stuck by it. When the mare decided to come closer, he watched her carefully but not out of distrust. Rather, curiosity glittered in his dark eyes as she looked him over. He held his ground and kept his stance neutral, giving her time to take everything in and process. He wouldn't rush her on this. Not after she'd kept her promise.

She said it was good to see her birthplace again and he had to assume she meant where she brought Everglow. His expression softened a little. "This place isn't a prison, you know. You're welcome to visit your birthplace. I don't restrict my mares on where they go, so long as they know if there's trouble, I'll be right there. I'm here to serve you, believe it or not." He was sure there was plenty of doubt on that, especially where Everglow was concerned. Yes, he'd been rough and pushy in his manner to get her to the Desert, but he'd learned a lot since then and he was figuring out that one could get more loyalty from his herd if he was more of a pleasure to be around. He was a work in progress, but he was putting forth an effort, anyway. He could almost see the pain chiseled in the fine lines of her face as she spoke of it and the protector in her wanted to shield her from all that pain.

She said that her father still ruled there and everyone was safe. He didn't even flinch when she said Everglow's name. He still thought his offer was a good one when the blind mare literally walked into him but he knew now that he'd gone about his offer the wrong way and that's where he screwed up. His brow raised a little. "Your father?" He remember vaguely listening to her and Everglow trying to plot on their families getting vengeance but he didn't recall hearing a name. Maybe she'd tell him now who her father was. His lip twitched a little with humor, wondering if she meant to add "from you" at the end of that sentence. That they were safe, and far away from the likes of him. That's why her next words surprised him, saying that they were safe because of him. His ears drew back and his brow lifted again and he took the time to study her again, perhaps looking for some sign of sarcasm.

When he didn't see it, he offered a dry chuckle. "That's the goal, anyway." As she reached out to his shoulder, he tensed instinctively, still not used to the non-violent ways of touching that mares sometimes offered him. He'd learned how to relax more around mares like Geneva and Harlequin, who he'd come to know and trust but Vihaan had certainly not been friendly in her contact last time they'd met. Of course, neither was he. She kept the touch brief, drawing back quickly, but he let out the breath he didn't even know he was holding when she did. As she turned her face away, his brows furrowed again in concern, knowing there had to be a reason she was looking away now. Was she still disgusted by him? He didn't expect a fast recovery from their last meeting. Like Primrose, he knew it would take time to earn her trust.

When she finally did look again at him, he could see she seemed almost relaxed around him. She was every bit as she'd said she would be: obedient, willing. But he had to wonder if it was an effort for her to appear as such to him after what they'd been through. He had to wonder if she was hiding her true self behind this mask of nobility and he found that he wanted to know she wasn't. He didn't want her to pretend. The mare angled her muzzle toward him before she lowered her lips to the oasis to drink. He stood still and patient as she quenched her thirst, sure that she was exhausted and thirsty after her journey. When she asked about somewhere sheltered to rest, he nodded and gestured with his head. "There's a nice island of palm trees over here that we can rest under."

He found he liked that she'd said "we," inviting him along. She wasn't trying to sneak away now that she'd made herself known or make it clear that she wanted to be alone. She actually seemed interested to be here and didn't seem to mind that it was with him. It still surprised him when a mare acted like that and it wasn't easy for him to trust when he saw the eagerness, but he would go along with it for now. He had to believe that Vihaan, of all mares, would be more honest about her emotions than that. If he looked close enough at her, he swore he could see the shadows of a real smile on her lips, but not enough to make it clear. Maybe some day he'd see it plain as day. He'd work to earn that day. Turning, the stocky stallion led her toward the trees he was talking about. Even in winter, they still had some leaves left to guard from the sun. He waited for her beneath the shade, not sure where she wanted to stand or whether she'd just choose to lie down to rest her hooves and legs, so he let her pick first before he made himself comfortable.
