EVREN

Evren pricks her ears with interest when Creed explains about the injured mare that she and Persephone had stumbled upon. Evren’s curious expression is quickly marred by a deep frown of concern, however, and anger flares in her chest. She is reminded of what Warsaw had done to Hannah, and her head shakes with disgust. If she could, she would crush every rapist into the earth.

“Poor mare. That’s awful,” Evren says, her dark copper eyes warm with sympathy. “She’s lucky she washed up here and not… elsewhere.” Evren’s mind drifts to the other islands - specifically Tinuvel - as it has frequently these days. But she chases those thoughts away and refocuses on the mare before her. She will get to that topic in time.

“The Forest seems to be attracting a lot of lost souls lately,” Evren comments, “my family among them, mostly. You might have seen Tarek’s mother - my sister Indira - and her daughter Kalayani around. My son Han was here for a while, too, but he’s since moved on. I don’t think Indira and Kalayani are going anywhere any time soon, though, so I’m sure you’ll have plenty of time to get to know them. They’re good horses; they’ll treat you like family… which you are, in a sense. At least, I like to think of all of us as one big family.” Evren’s face brightens in a smile.

“Speaking of which, the Forest is going to be growing even more soon. It’s maybe not my place to say, but I’m fairly certain Hannah is pregnant… as are Persephone and myself.” Her eyes glimmer with a mixture of pride and sheepishness as she looks at Creed.

“But that brings me on to my next point. I don’t know how in the loop you are, or if you’ve heard the rumors… but the Forest is at war. A stallion called Warsaw and his allies have a problem with mare-led herds, and that means they have a problem with Persephone. With us.” The glimmer in Evren’s eyes has been replaced by a cold hardness, and her expression is stern and solemn. “Luthien is united as a whole, but we don’t know when Warsaw will move against us.”

Evren lets out a deep exhale and lets her eyes drop to the ground for a moment. “For that reason, it’s not really safe for any of us to leave the island alone right now, so I’d urge you to be careful, Creed. And we need all the eyes we can get right now, so let someone know if you see anything amiss. You mentioned wanting to help the herd, right? I think that’s probably the best way to do it. And… if something happens, don’t put yourself in unnecessary danger. If the foals have dropped by then, maybe your job can be to help them and the others who aren’t fighting get to safety. Either of our neighbors, Ruger or Shamwari, can be trusted.”

Conscious of sounding too stern and frightening, Evren forces a smile onto her face to break the tension and reaches out to playfully nip at Creed’s mane. “But don’t worry. We’re all in this together. Even if Warsaw marches tomorrow, we’ll be ready for him. And, personally, I can’t wait to wipe the smirk off his face with my hooves.”
