He could feel the growing tension in the air and knew it must have to do with the war everyone kept talking about. He was happy enough that he and his herd weren't involved in it at all but he still worried that the war would spill over onto Salem. He would do anything to ensure the safety of his mares and children so he was diligent to patrol the shores and borders of his herdlands, looking for anything amiss. Vihaan was helpful at this point, aiding him in his patrols and he was grateful enough for the company. She was sticking to her promise she'd made in the meadow, showing him nothing but affection and loyalty and he was happy for it. She actually seemed to enjoy her time here, and now that she had Akello, she had another piece of the puzzle. Cain could see that family meant a lot to the dunalino mare and she was very protective over those she cared about. He could see that same fire in her eyes every time she looked at Akello, and as they grew closer, sometimes when she looked at him.

It made his chest tighten to know how strongly he was starting to care for his mares and to see the evidence that they were starting to care for him as well. It was a new feeling, having mares that didn't feel forced to be here. Even Primrose was softening her fear and anguish toward him. He felt lighter on his hooves as a consequence and it was a good feeling. Cain was making his rounds, pausing to take a drink from an oasis when the frantic cry of Vihaan had his head snapping up as he bolted toward her, ready to attack any who thought to make such a sound fall from her lips. When he reached her though with pinned ears and flaring nostrils, it was only to see her staring off across the ocean at a flicker of movement toward the other islands. "Vihaan? What is it?" He queried as he stepped beside her, following her gaze. She told him there were multiple figures from Atlantis swimming toward Luthien. His lip curled back for a moment, his adrenaline pumping as he thought about battle and the anticipation soared in his veins for a moment before he remembered himself.

He shook his head of such thoughts. This wasn't his war and he had no part in it. He had a herd to protect. When Vihaan spoke of fear, his gaze swept to hers, his expression softening as he snorted. He would ask what he could do but he had a feeling she was about to tell him. He watched as her own gaze swept back to watch the swimming horses, anxiety dancing in her eyes and his chest tightened again. He had a feeling whatever she was about to say, he wasn't going to like it. And just as he feared, she asked to go to them, to swim right into the throes of the battle to check on her family. His breath caught for a moment as he feared the worst. What if she went and got herself hurt, or worse? He would never forgive himself. He was supposed to protect her, defend her as he would any of his mares. Hope leaped in his chest at the idea that he could go with her, but he instantly squashed that down. He couldn't leave the herd like that. He was their only protector. He was needed here, especially with the war going on.

Turmoil continued behind his eyes for a moment until he felt the soft touch of Vihaan's velvet muzzle to his own. It brought him back to the present and he let out a soft sigh as he melted to her touch, closing his eyes for a moment as he just enjoyed her presence. As she spoke again, his eyes re-opened, all his worries and worst nightmares on display in his dark gaze as he studied her face like it would be the last time. She asked again to go, mentioning that she would return to Akello. She would leave him? Surely she couldn't be far from her son for long. He didn't know whether to be happy about that or not. It might ensure that she come back quicker but it might also endanger his son's health if she didn't come back quicker. He scowled thoughtfully. Her last words created a tremor under his skin, his eyes widening as the meaning hit him. She cared enough to return to him, despite their troubled past.

His lips finally found their voice. "I wish I could go with you and protect you, but I know that I am needed here. The herd needs a guardian now more than ever." He reached out, gently lipping at her mane as he breathed in her sweet scent. "I know you will not be happy to stay here in safety worrying about your family so I know I have to let you go. I have to trust you once more to return to me. But know this, Vihaan, if you are harmed in any way, shape, or form, all of Hell's wrath will fall on the unfortunate soul who thought to touch that which is mine." His gaze darkened with promise as he spoke the last words, his head raising as determination lit up his eyes. But just as quickly, he lowered it back down and his eyes sought out hers in a gentle way. "Go to your family. I will protect Akello. Come back to me."
