I think our efforts are aimed primarily at preventing China from achieving total dominance over our friends and allies in the area; e.g, the Philippines, South Vietnam, Japan, etc..
The below-linked article discusses the strategic importance of the South China Sea; one of the most important elements of which is the fact that one third of the world's shipping passes through the South China Sea.
