First Breath After A Coma

I would honestly love you now,
But I would lovingly let you down.

It all spiraled so fast. One moment, Jabari was intently focused on Rougaru, running at him with everything he had, in an effort to assist Evren and Persephone. The next, one of Rougaru's mares was at his heels, slashing at him with her hooves and teeth. He tried to stay focused on his goal of maiming the silver bay stallion, or at least distracting him long enough to aid the Forest mares to get at Warsaw without the additional threat. But everything was happening in a split second. He had no way to gauge just how successful his efforts had been.

The painted stallion beat back Rougaru's mare long enough to disappear into the resounding chaos. He slipped from one battle and into the next, kicking out at bachelor stallions and galloping with teeth bared at any mare or stallion who smelled of Atlantis and Tinuvel. It was difficult to be precise and calculated in all this. More than half of the horses in this fight he didn't recognize at all. He had no semblance of understanding if what he was doing was making a dent at all, nor if it was actually helping advance his Luthien family.

Jabari's frenzied gaze surveyed the growing scene. More horses were flooding in from the shore every few moments. He felt his heart drop into his gut. This was horrific. The more horses who entered the battle scene, the more carnage there would be. The sides of his barrel rose and fell in shallow huffs as he stood frozen in time, immoble in his small patch of grass of the larger battlefield. He was overcome with a deep sense of regret. All of this felt so futile, so stupid. What would it change? Nothing. It would only further the hearbreak and pain both sides of the foolish war had thrust upon them all.

But there was no turning back time.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw of flash of pale hide under the moonlight. His blue eyes trained upon it, and he blinked in rapid succession to sharpen his gaze. A chill ran down the length of his spine when he recognized her as Celestria. Jabari snorted then and trotted off after her. By the time he found her again, she was standing with another pale mare - one who looked oddly familiar, but Jabari couldn't place her. At least not right now. "Celestria." He barked as he neared, his copper-colored ear lobes flat against his skull. "Get the fuck away from her." He pawed viciously at the earth then, showing the mare he fully intended to make good on his word. There was no sign of Rougaru now, to step in and back her up. Jabari's nostrils flared as he moved closer to the pair, catching the fresh scent of the Prairie on this stranger. She was from his home... and a surge of urgency grew in his chest. He would defend this mare, his father's family, and by extension, his own family, with everything that he had.
