Independence. It's equal parts liberating and lonely. Havelle finds herself alone more than ever now too. Once she was one half of a whole set of twins. Once she had a mother to watch over her. Now she is just Havelle. It's a lot to adjust to, becoming her own person. She is growing, not just physically, but growing into her own, and finding out who she is without her brother or her parents to make her choices for her. It's only recently that Havelle has been brave enough to venture to the crossing isle on her own. Now that Liland has given her this freedom, she is taking full advantage, but of course without doing anything to lose herself the privilege.
The grinding of her jaw is a as steady as the passing of strangers through the meadow. Each one is a nondescript equine shape moving through her peripheral vision, until one nondescript shape wanders near enough to cast a shadow over her eyes. The filly looks up without lifting her head, and there stands a colt, reading the lines of her face like the lines of well-read book.
She picks her head up, and his statement draws a gentle smile across her face. "I could say the same about you." The weary look upon this colt's face is the spark ignites the flame of curiosity. What tragedy wrote the lines in your book? Havelle would love to know. Story time was always her favorite, but she knows better than to ask such questions.
