First Breath After A Coma

I would honestly love you now,
But I would lovingly let you down.

Jabari offered Calypso a sheepish grin when she shared some warm words of support. His blue-eyed gaze flitted up to lock onto hers for a short moment before they flicked back to the foliage around them. "I appreciate that." He spoke genuinely, as his brown tail swat anxiously over his haunches. "It's actually really good to see you. Finally... a friendly face." He added.

The painted stallion is both outraged and disappointed in his father, upon learning that Shamwari was the reason behind why Calypso was back here in Paradise. When the pretty mare pressed him on his sudden shift in demeanor, he hesitated before answering her. Jabari focused on her pretty face, watching as the delicate strands of her wavy forelock drifted over one brilliant blue eye. He felt a sudden urge to step forward and gently drape his whiskered muzzle over the length of her face to remove the strands from her view, but he held back. Calypso wasn't his by any means. The tiny sleeping filly in the distance was a constant reminder of that.

So instead, he huffed a heavy sigh. "Shamwari is a good guy." He offered about his sire. "He knows.... what Rougaru is capable of." He said again with another anxious flick of his chestnut tail. "I don't know why he wouldn't fight to keep you safe from him. It's not like him..." His voiced trailed off. "I would have fought for you."

An awkward silence hung between them. Jabari's ears pricked forward and back as he listened to the hum of the jungle's inhabitants all around them: the drone of the insects within the trees, the occasional cry of an exotic bird overhead. When Calypso mentioned her affinity for the terrain, he merely bobbed his head as he continued to survey it. "I can understand that." He offered in agreement. It a strange, but magical place. But Calypso was quick to bring them both back to reality. Her life had changed greatly since Jabari had first met her back at the Falls on the Crossing Isle. She was a mother now. Being a father, he understood the responsibility. When Calypso bluntly, but bravely puts Jabari in his place about far-off dreams, he heaved yet another solemn sigh as his thoughts drifted to Petal and his girls back in the Prairie. His heart ached then, sending pulses from his chest into his extremities.

"You're right." He grumbled. "It was a dumb question to ask."
