Grab me by my ankles
I've been flying for too long

Blue felt decidedly out of place in the spiffy outfit Olive had put him in, but she was glad he'd allowed her to dress him up; left to his own devices he'd no doubt have put on a particularly acceptable suit but acceptable and magnificent were worlds apart, and didn't Blue deserve a bit of magnificence in his life, now and then? The poor guy exhausted her just by looking at him; he was always rushing one way or another, gladly giving away chunks of himself in exchange for little, if anything. Even now he was fretting, one eye focused on his mother and Poppy (she still hadn't figured out how exactly that had happened) and the other on his little sister. Isla was making a beeline for the buffet, happily squishing the odd toe with her powered chair when the crowd didn't part quickly enough for her.

There was a little part of her that knew perfectly well that she was doing that again. When she'd been low her thoughts had been only of herself, of the darkness she was in, and now that she'd clawed her way back up to stand in the light with Grayson, she could only think about helping others achieve that happiness. Cypress and Alder had both tolerated her advice, but what she'd really needed was a project, and Blue was just the sort of tolerant friend to not mind her meddling.

"Stop making that face, honey," Olive whispered to him. "You're making my suit look uncomfortable."

Blue fidgeted, expression apologetic. "It's just... I feel like if I'm not careful it's going to get dirty or something. Maybe I should go change."

Olive sighed audibly, craning her neck to see if she could spot Grayson through the crowd. "Clothes are meant to be worn, Blue. And besides, you'd break Effie's heart. You know how much she liked helping to make it."

Blue looked crestfallen; Olive bit the inside of her cheek to stop herself from grinning. That would put the argument to bed for now. Remembering the "love charm" Effie had painstakingly sewn into the embroidery at the nape of his neck made her chuckle despite herself; the good humor brightened her expression, already glowing thanks to her condition.

A man was making a beeline for them now, catching Olive's attention, and she grinned. Ah, he was just her sort too - if she weren't already happily taken, knocked up, and, of course, if he weren't fantastically gay. She happily obeyed his instructions, the clap making her laugh a little in delight. She swept a little curtsy to him, eyes sparkling at his invitation.

"Yes, please," she said enthusiastically, happy to be swept along. Grayson would forgive her, after all.

And of course, she was happier still to see that Blue was standing stock still at her side, a sort of vacant look on his face. She hadn't seen that look before, in all the years she'd known him. He looked like he'd been electrocuted, and he was staring. Olive elbowed him slightly as she accepted the man's hand, and he startled guiltily. As they began to dance, Olive cocked her head and smiled at him.

"I'm Olive," she said. "And the man you've struck speechless," she inclined her head towards her friend as they danced past. "is Blue."

I couldn't hide from the thunder
In the sky full of song
