Winter had come on fast and the falls had completely frozen over. The ice shell shined in the morning sun and Zimri stood next to the stones that normally shined with the moisture and mists from the falling water, but now danced with the rainbow reflection of the rising sun on the frozen crystals.
She had been on the islands for a season now and had already faced one of her demons and stood her ground. Her love for Ruger was as strong as ever, even as his scarred and wild face looked at her as if she were both the sun of his universe and the ghost of all that haunted him. It was as though he could not look at her and see her clearly and she wondered if they would forever play this tune, always just out of harmony. Dark blue ears twisted as her mind wandered down the river beside her, still moving under the surface of the ice. This was where she had been her entire time on the islands, the only place she had been able to call him. She had spent so much time running from everything it was only the falls that had called her back more than once. She sighed as she stepped from the softly rumbling wall of ice. Her hooves stepped delicately through the snow until she met a more packed trail. Many horses here had taken the path through the peaceful place, choosing to stay here rather than find a home. Even so, she had seen many come and go with companions while she had been encouraged to stay. Stay here and stay safe.The trail took her to a well populated meadow just next to the falls. Many came here to graze and meander, as if there was nothing to worry about in the world and to enjoy the peaceful music of the world. She scraped at the snow until she found the dormant stalks that would feed her. Content, she munched on the grass, trying to ignore the lingering feeling of loneliness settling on her heart. |
