You can blame it on me

If you think I'm the misery,

The spotted stallion was so close he might have convinced himself he could hear the moon-splashed mare’s heart thundering in her chest. Could he hear it? He could hear her teeth clicking together as she trembled. He relished the sound. His eyes glossed over her painted skin, watching the muscles twitch and dance beneath it in fear. He chuckled, a low, rumbling sound like gentle thunder. His lips curled up toward his eyes, white teeth showing through the slit of a grin. If he could feel her shivering, so close were their hides, could she feel the soft tremor of his laughter?

Abruptly the painted mare swung away from him, and Sylens thrust his head upward to tower over her, his ears laced back, though not quite buried in his dark mane. His laughter and smile were gone, leaving his face a blank red mask. He had hardly expected her to face him, but here she was, brave little thing. If not for her hind hooves submerged in the frigid pool of the Falls, the mare would have been as tall as Sylens, but he had the higher ground, and she appeared small to him now. The grin began to return, but it was not the curling, sinister smile it had been a second ago; this one was for show. It looked charming. Maybe even handsome. "I know plenty of things," he assured her vaguely. "As for Persephone…" His eyes darkened and he leaned toward her menacingly. Of course, he had no actual idea what she was talking about. He knew of Hades and Persephone, but did not make the connection this time, and did not realize he had appeared to her as the god of the dead. Still, he could read the fear along the lines of her face when she spoke the name of Hades’ wife, and he could not stop himself from using it. "Well, how badly do you want to know?"

With that, he stepped away from her, out of the puddle of moonlight surrounding the falls in which they had been standing. He still faced her, but he was once again shrouded in shadows. He wanted to see if she would be brave enough to follow him into the darkness; after all, had it not been brave of Sylens, a great spotted snake, to step into the moonlight and reveal himself to his prey? He grinned again. The teeth-bearing one this time. "Come here," he said gently. "I’ll tell you about Persephone."
