FIRE BURNS WHERE IT FALLS

Kore was swift, and quickly caught up to him despite his brief head start. He kept an ear trained upon her as they traded leads, his nose edging hers and vice versa. As the sun finally dipped behind the gentle rolling sands and the stars revealed themselves among the violet light of the night, Maslakhat too felt invigorated by the coolness in the air. He pushed ahead of her, if only to show her the way around a large, wide dune, revealing the oasis at the heart of the land. Dotted will a few sparse palms and long, needly grass, its true treasure was the pool of fresh water that reflected the stars above, clear and still as glass.

He smirked with delight as she slid to a stop, her delightful laughter filling the air as she sent sand spraying, disrupting the stillness of the water with an assault of fine particles like meteors in the night sky.

“Well there’s no mistaking your grand arrival,” he replied, teasing her for her abrupt stop. “So therefore I’d say you’ve earned a few more answers.”

Maslakhat paused and lifted his head to peer across the expanse of the oasis, a tug of his gut suggesting they were not alone underneath the light of the crescent moon. His nostrils flared and he snorted lightly, keeping his choice of words careful should there be a snake lurking between the palms.

“I seldom feel lonesome, though I do have a preference for the company of fine individuals.”
