Where Does it All Stop? Posted on 6/23/2020 at 18:53:45 by Bill Crawford, (14)
With the recent news stories about protesters trying to tear down the statue of Andrew Jackson, it becomes obvious that the primary reason for such actions is not that the statues are of Confederate traitors (a reason which has appeared in some of the news stories up to this point), but because they are statues of either slave owners or of persons sympathetic to slaveowners.
This caused me to check out the number of Presidents who have owned slaves. It turns out that a total of twelve Presidents were slave owners (See below link).
George Washington owned 317; Thomas Jefferson, 600; Andrew Jackson, 200; etc.. In all, a total of 1558 slaves were owned by Presidents.
Shall we destroy the symbols of all of these slave-owning Presidents; e.g.,monuments, names of towns, names of universities, etc.?
As I said before, I think we should allow these dark times to remain as a part of our past history, as did Lincoln, when he attempted to bring the country back together.
