EVREN

With the herd’s foals having dropped, the summer atmosphere in the Forest is one of bustling activity, with an almost constant backdrop of laughter and chatter to punctuate the gentle hiss and rustle of wind through the trees. It’s a welcome break from the previous months of solemnity, and a welcome distraction from the concerns that have been weighing on Evren’s mind. She could not love her daughters more, or be more thankful for the small family she and Persephone have built together.

Persephone. That name carries more weight now than ever before. Whether she’s dozing in the mid-afternoon sun, patrolling the borders, or watching the children at play, it’s not long before Evren finds her thoughts turning toward Persephone, having forever changed the atmosphere between them with her confession just prior to Sephine and Eadaz’s births.

Evren has tried not to smother Persephone, and to give her as much space as they’d always given each other before, but when they are apart she finds herself itching to run after the mare, to be with her and make up for all the days they’d ever been apart.

On this particular day, Evren had not followed Persephone deliberately - she had slipped into one of the well-worn trails that snaked through the trees in the direction of the Thicket, having seen one of the girls wander off in that direction and wanting to ensure she was not trespassing on their new neighbor’s land. As of yet, their neighbor had not introduced himself, and neither have Persephone or Evren sought him out - perhaps out of subconscious caution and distrust after everything that’s happened - but now, it seems, that day has come.

Evren catches the stallion’s scent first, and she turns without pause in its direction, a little spark of fear igniting in her belly at the prospect of one of the girls running into him alone. Ears pricked and eyes alert, Evren weaves through the underbrush at a brisk trot, scraping her belly against a thorny bush in her haste, but then she catches Persephone’s scent, and she slows with relief. Soon the two come into view through the trees, and Evren steps cautiously onto the scene, russet eyes locked on their guest as she finds a place near Persephone’s side.

He’s a stout, hairy beast, with a charcoal coat that contrasts against the silver of his hair, and pale speckles that, at first glance, resemble dapples of sunlight. There is no malice in his eyes or tension in his body, and after shooting a glance at Persephone and noting her ease, Evren offers the stranger a brief, polite smile. “I hope I’m not interrupting anything,” she says. “You’re our new neighbor, right? I’m Evren; I live here in the Forest.”
