He hated that he didn't get to spend more time with Berit and her son, Vulcan. After the relief of knowing Carbon was going to make it set in, he'd needed to debrief and let all that stress go for a little while but he'd never meant to leave the mare he owed everything to neglected. He meant what he said to her when they made their deal. She and her son were completely under his protection and he would do anything for them. He considered Vulcan his as much as she would allow and he would teach the boy everything he wanted or needed to know. Though it seemed the boy had chosen Akello to be more his mentor and Cain was okay with that. He was proud of his oldest son and what he had accomplished and he couldn't think of a better role model for Vulcan.

He had watched her with Carbon and the sight made his heart feel three times bigger. She was so good with him and he had no doubt that she treated him like her own. She even had to discipline him with nips and such now cause he was a handful now that he'd gotten his muscle tone and energy back. When he spoke of Vulcan, he noticed the slight shift in her personality. Intrigued, he raised a brow and tilted his head. But his ears pricked again when she said she'd been sticking to the shoreline for the cool breeze and that she should have sought out the caves. He smiled and nodded. "They're much cooler. The breeze is a temporary respite but with the sun overhead, it's hard to ever truly get cool." She spoke of the boys and his expression softened with affection at the mention. He truly did love being a father.

When she asked if he would show her the caves, his smile curled up further into a more coy smirk, his eyes getting a little twinkle in them as he swished his tail and nudged his head in a "follow me" gesture. "It would be my honor." He murmured the words as he slowly turned to lead her to the caves. He kept his pace to whatever she chose, wanting to be next to her as he led her through the sand and toward the edge where the cool caverns awaited. As they walked, he kept stealing little glances in the smokey mare's direction. He admired her mixture of dark colors and the kindness that showed in her eyes. The little dapples in her coat were intriguing and she walked with such confidence. He would forever be grateful that he happened upon her when he needed her the most. She was like an angel, there for Carbon, but also there for him.

When they made it to the cave entrance, he paused for a moment to let her check it out if she needed to. Then when she was ready, he led the way inside. Pausing to let her eyes adjust to the dimmer lighting, he blinked a few times, checking on her before continuing further in. The moment they were in the entrance, the temperature was already 20 degrees cooler. The air wasn't stagnant though with little holes in the walls and ceilings to let in air and bits of breeze. As they walked, he stole another glance at her, wondering what she thought.
