He came to her suddenly, and without missing a stride, he matches her gait expertly as they run together—his form larger and more robust, but undoubtedly of the same blood as her, evidenced only further by the unmistakable inwardly curved ears atop his head. She regarded him with something like surprise on her face as they cantered together, his eyes sparkling under the cool light of the moon. Pilar was immediately transfixed, so much so that she stumbled at the same moment he spoke—all the elegance and grace she would have liked to display disappearing in an instant.
She slowed to right her clumsiness, the sand behind her marred with her hapless steps and she snorted, tossing her head with a combination of shame and annoyance at her misgivings. Pilar’s expectations for herself were too high, and really, she was old enough to know better. Yet, it only figured that the first instance of meeting a stallion like him—someone who seemed as impressive as ever—and this was the first impression she made.
“Uhm, I suppose,” she mumbled, flustered. “Sorry…”
She immediately wished she hadn’t left the Thicket—at least Rille was the sort not to judge her, and she had no idea what kind of stallion this beautiful stranger was. It was all too convenient that he appear out of nowhere, his dusty red coat tightly pulled over his slender frame. What should have felt familiar felt instead like he had outed her as some kind of fraud—undeserving to dance the steps of their kind.
“I should go,” Pilar added, turning back with the full intent to dash back into the surf, unless there was something he could say that intrigued or redeemed her enough to remain.
