Ed,
There are several articles in various Navy-oriented publications arguing that we should be building more LHDs/LHAs and fewer CVNs; the argument being that this would allow us to show our presence in more hot spots around the world; specifically, in the less high intensity hot spots.
(I think the cost differential between a CVN and an LHD/LHA is about four to one).
