 "Mother?" he bleats, his voice is shrill as he looks around. His heart hammers against his ribs and his eyes are wide and rimmed with white. Why had she told him that she would be right back? And then never came back. He looks desperately around, all that he saw for as far as he could see was the sandy shores and prairie grasses. He then turns his attention to the wide open ocean and the surf at his hooves, his ears lace against his skull as he lunges at the frothy surf. All of the fear and anger, he unleashes on the sea. It splashes around with him each strike of his hoof and he feels the anger bubble up hotter. He plunges into the sea and kicks out with his spindly legs. He kicks harder until he can no longer feel solid ground beneath him. He kicks a few more times but then realization washes over him. The sea could kill him and a panicked squeal pushes past his lips as he tries to turn back. But the current reaches up, grabs him, and it pulls him from the sandy shore. He sputters and struggles against the sea. She must of took pity on the colt as the sea spit him onto the sandy shore. His mouth gapes and gasps with each breath. He lays weary within the the frothy surf with just his head out of the surf. "Mother," he croaks as he lays his head back agains the dry sands. His eyes close against the bright afternoon sun.
