should swing the sword

Faldne had always found words to be as empty as the wind that carried them - but oh, how this single creature threatened to unravel this firmly-entangled thread of her beliefs.

Had she not feared what else might come undone in the process, the Icelandic might have even embraced the reckless abandon of letting go. As it was, she clung tightly to the frayed end of this conviction whilst Evandr sought more than once to tear it from her grasp, rattling her with the undeniable truth of his own. And had she been asked before this moment whether day and night might ever coexist, Faldne would have laughed at the impossibility of such a feat. Only the evidence of this stallion’s light amongst her own darkness could confound the very laws of nature. It was the most disquieting thing that the stout mare had ever experienced, to see a sun rise in the midst of her blackest night. Part of her even wondered whether the stallion had been placed in her path for a reason. Whether he was meant to steer her down the same path that she suspected he himself would take in her position. And that thought was, perhaps, the most unsettling of all.

Yet it was also the most comforting - to know that regardless of the choice that she made, Evandr’s goodness would exist to uphold the precarious balance that must be maintained in all things.

You are only a fool if you give up, Evandr murmured - appearing to respond to the dark decline of her thoughts. Yet he could not be more wrong. "If I continue trying, I might lose myself. But if I give up, then I stand to lose everything else. And no matter what I do, Evandr, I am a fool." It was strange that the weight of a single life should suddenly carry such significance, considering the few she’d snuffed out without a flicker of conscience. Yet that had been before she had seen the despair in her enemy’s eyes, and understood how terrible it would be to die with the burden that they carried. Before she had experienced hope and what it felt like to pass its gift on to another.

It was for this reason that she welcomed the spark that Evandr offered her in the gentle reassurance of his touch. Without a hint of the lust from before, she melted into the brush of his lips when they stroked her mane, the warmth and pressure of his chin against the curve of her spine. You are better off than you think, he vowed - and in that moment even the dubious Faldne could not help but to agree. In that moment, she could not help but to feel a glow of something that might have been joy as he pronounced himself her friend, and stated that no circumstances could change it. Only distantly did she wonder whether he might feel the same if he was aware of her purpose here. Or if he should find her after, when the blood of another would stain her.

"Not for as long as you are here, at least," she conceded with the warm inflection of a true smile. And I would keep you forever, Evandr, if I believed that such a thing were possible. But instead - instead I will content myself to know you now, and to carry that memory with me when you go." True to her word, she released the past from her thoughts and barred the future from consideration. And - living only for the moment - she allowed herself a sigh of contentment before speaking again.

"Tell me about home," she commanded gently, wanting to hear what sort of place could breed creatures such as this one. "Not why you left, but why you might have stayed." The arch of her neck twisted so that she could glance back at the pearl-toned male. "Tell me what you loved, but not so much that you couldn’t bear to let it go."
