Egad! shocking memories return. USMC Boot Camp imbedded those 10 General orders into your brain! i at last have forgotten them, but maybe IF I work on it, I could recall them. But, I remember one time after completing Boot Camp while in 2nd MAR DIV at Camp Leju\eune on a very black cold night and a freezing nigh about Xmas, I was posted as a sentry on the HQ BN fuel dump ( a few barrels of gas with a hand pump). to guard them from otherer Marines ) Armed with a loaded M-1 carbuine, i decided to rest my legs so I sat oj a 6x6 truck runnimng board. after a very long blackl nighjt. I heard the sound a jeep far away, thjat alerted me. I stood, and edged to the perimeter to try penetrat the darkness, as I heard footsteps coming close slowly. I shouted "Halt ' and Approach slowly to be recognized as I lloaded a round in the carbine chjamber ( a audible recognizable sound to any Marine, The person approached me to about 6 feet. I stated Halt, I got a Reply " Officer of the DAY" I went to present arm from aiming ahead. OD Recgnized was my reply. The OD was an old hand Warrant Officer and was checking post he remarked " its a cold night, how are you doing" i reolied "fine". in Those days days we were authorised to shoot to kill to protect govt property/ I think that old WO was frightened stifv when he got thart command and heard thwe bolt fly forward, as i was Boot Marine not an old hand.
guard duty was risky, I am sur he styopped trying sneaking up to new Boots thenafter. Replies:
