It was hard not to appreciate the energy that Talya brought. The barely-a-man could feel her excitement starting to seep in, and take hold of him. Even if it was temporary, he would accept the light to drive out some of the darkness in his head, in his chest. Borrowing the light of the strange, painted creature… that would be okay. Frey would be okay with that, at least for now. He was grateful for the distraction.
Her tone grew serious as she explained the rules, and Frey nodded intently. His gaze was rapt as he focused on the shorter, lithe mare. Okay. Yes, three things. “What counts as cheating?” Now he was concerned. Not that Frey would go out of his way to cheat, that would defeat the fun of the game, but what if he cheated accidentally? You know when you’re going through airport security and you’re like oh no, what if I accidentally packed my spare box cutter in my carry on? It was that kind of abstract worry that seeped in. Frey didn’t want to offend her, especially after he’d just found company.
She named the base, and Frey nodded-- it would make for a good base. Okay, now what about the treasures? “How about a stick that’s green on the inside, so it doesn’t snap but it bends?” His suggestion was in earnest, tail swishing at his haunches with excitement for the game. A grand game it would be, of course. “And… um, a pine cone, but it has to be bigger than your foot!” The sooty colt was getting into this. “Your foot, not mine, I think mine are too big.” Frey was, after all, bigger and denser. As for the third treasure? He was stumped. “What do you think for the last one?”
Already, Frey was more into this game than he’d anticipated. He could feel the excitement bubbling in his chest-- a grand game it would be.
