PERSEPHONE

Autumn had Luthien in its grasp and as each week passed, Persephone could feel winter beginning to creep in, ready to freeze the ground and frost the trees with its cloak of white and ice. Her pelt was already growing thick in anticipation, and though the chill in the air could be uncomfortable, she had never minded the colder seasons.

They were a welcome break from the long, sticky monotony of summer, and tucked up in the sheltered recesses of the Forest, Persephone had good shelter from the worst of the weather. She could not imagine a life on Tinuvel, where she might freeze during the winter and perhaps only shiver during the summer. Nor could she imagine spending all her time on an island like Salem, where there was rarely a cool breeze to provide respite from the sun’s oppressive, constant glare.

Luthien provided variety and change, and for that she was thankful. It was the changing of the seasons by which she could mark time and memories. It stopped life from feeling stale.

It was these thoughts she pondered as she wandered around the Forest’s borders. There were many evergreens that kept the Forest full and lush, but here and there were bare-boned trunks that had left a spray of red, amber and gold to crunch underfoot as she made her way past. The early-morning air was crisp and cool in her lungs, and made little clouds around her nose as she exhaled.
