Finley was grumpy. He hadn’t been born that way, but with the changes that had happened in his life, he had become that way and couldn’t find it in himself to change back. It wasn’t as bad since he had come to the Crossing. That day he had flung himself to the sea to impress Fate, only to find himself cold and alone on this strange island; it was a relief he didn’t know he needed to be away from his family. To be away from his mother.
Since then, just like he was now, Finley was alone. The only company he had decided he needed, was himself. Anyone else would try to tell him what to do. How he needed to lead his life. To find mares, to make a herd, to hold a territory. Or join some brotherhood that sounded more like a cult to him. No, Finley was sure that he was perfectly fine exactly as he was. Chasing shoots of grass, alone, in the meadow.
Color caught Finley’s attention from the corner of his eye, and he raised his head while still munching on his mouth full of grass. His ears twitched forward, watching the other young stallion snatch at the remaining fall grass as if it were his first or maybe his last meal. How…. odd. Dropping his head again, ignoring the other stallion, Finley returned to his own grazing as it was none of his business how the other stallion ate.
Only, the longer Finley thought about it, the more he went from wondering if the paint was a son of Solomon, to fully thinking the stranger was one of his many brothers. Sent here by one of his parents to spy on him, and report back to the Cove. With one last bite, Finley raised his head again before marching over to the stranger with ears pinned and eyes narrowed in anger. “Which one was it that sent you to spy on me?” he practically snarled at the innocent bystander.
