Re(3): Fox4 could care less about Cops

Cops will be never more than union Teamster trade laborers until they get rid of their military models and union mentalities--sometimes more into union member loyalties and the unfortunate habit of meting out extortion or vengeance upon city governments. That's not a professional attitude for an industry whose objective is to protect and serve.

America desperately needs a police PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION modeled after health care and educational associations that require annual Educational classes for CERTIFICATIONS (with letters after their names) on more than just shooting range and baton beating skills.

They need certification on the Constitution, mental disorder identifcation, negotiating skills, reducing stress for themselves and citizens they come in contact with, ethics in law enforcement. Racial tolerance, anger management and deescalation, effective persuasion and communication skills, sociology of their communities, non-fatal apprehension, weapons Rules of Engagement, state and local laws, the court system, area mental health services, public relations skills, supervision, riot tactics, and lessons on effective policing from outside jurisdictions.

Police departments should not hire non-association trainees, or keep those not pursuing certifications. Nor should they ever be promoted without them. And they should lose their certifications or take targeted retraining as part of disciplinary actions.

Moreover if they expect to be treated with the respect of learned professionals, they need to approach career education as part of the job.

Unions seem to be more about protecting their job security, negotiating pay, and defending the bad apples in their ranks.

Certifications have a different purpose than unions which focus on pay, job security and defending those who don't meet public expectations.

Many associations for physician and nursing specialties have local or state chapters, meetings and conventions where classes are held for credit, online CEU's and reasonable dues, often about $100 a year.

Agree or disagree? Other ideas?
