Well, be glad you don't own those properties. Malls have been dying for years... too much time wasted, too many people just browse and don't buy.
Megatrend changes in retailing have been underway for years. And when Covid hit, that did it. Just like Radio and affiliate TV, the internet has changed the way we're entertained and how we buy things. We have a mall close to where I live, it's half empty. But a UPS truck stops at our house once or twice a week to deliver.
Stores are selling on line now. No shoplifting, no rents, no sales staffs, no paying the high cost of unsold inventory in every store...again stores cant' afford lots of selection waiting for you to come buy them out. Get on line, get your size, get it delivered in 3 days.
Covid taught us we can shop with our computers and mice. MY wife and I don't DINE IN anymore, we order online and pick up the food. No need to get dressed up. No 20 percent tips and expensive drinks.
Rural people have been buying on line for a long time or twice a month driving to Walmart in the county seat and stocking up, buying in bulk.
YOu're in KC, you know about Metro North, about Indian Springs, and about that big closed center down by the Grandview Triangle. People shop name brands at Walmart for less.
Why buy the same clothes made in Asia downtown when you can get the same clothes either online or at Walmart where you buy your groceries>??
ITs not the end of the world, friend. It's just different. Tell your kids there won't be jobs folding clothes at the mall...so go back to school and get skills that'll pay more than $10 an hour!
And quit voting for Republicans who have been holding down wages for 40 years! People can't afford to buy brand names at Ambercrombie's and Old Navy anymore. Not at the cost of tuition, new cars, energy bills, and food! Replies:
