mae

mare | 15.2hh | mutt | cremello | frost

As the moon wanes, so too does the pale woman who mirrors it. Mae refuses to acknowledge it, especially as her eyes rest upon the two daughters who sleep together in the silvery light. Kaeja was not given an easy start in life, but at least her younger sister did not know such horrors. The mother could see it in the way both of her children acted. How fearless Hiyori was, and how reserved Kaeja probably would always be. Mae would always feel guilty for not doing something sooner to protect her dark colored filly, now mare. But at least she had not left Kaeja to the darkness that was her father. A beast she hoped to never see again. The Peak was the best shield they would ever have.

A sigh managed to blow out between Mae’s pink lips, her eyes fluttering shut briefly as she tries to doze off. But the mother cannot chase away her restlessness. It had been a while since she had seen Sokar and Iah, and she wondered how the colt is doing. Would he look all grown up now, just as Hiyori was starting too? Eyes opening again, Mae lifts her head to the moon. Iah and his father were probably long gone, but she could not help her curiosity. Perhaps she should go and see, since she could not sleep anyways?

Leaving her daughters was always the hardest part. But Mae manages to drift down the mountainside and to the Falls, where she had last seen the duo. Instead of finding them though, she is greeted with the sight of a child, alone, nibbling on the grass. Her body looked worse for wear, the scent of her wound reaching the mother’s sensitive nose. All the while, Mae could only picture her as little Kaeja, as the two were similar in color.

Mae can’t help the soft rumbling sound that only a mother can make as she took careful steps towards the foal, not wanting to startle her. “Hello, little one.” she says in a hushed voice, not wanting to break the serenity of their surroundings despite the roar of the waterfall. “What are you doing here, all alone?” Mae asks, only able to pick up the smell of salt water and feared the worst.
