I don't think it's fair to say that the concept failed miserably.

By going that route they were able to generate a lot of media attention that would not have been possible with a 'normal' roster. We already knew that same old, same old doesn't work anymore. Just ask Calder or King's Court. Or look at their wagering pools, which were completely broken.

And part of the MC concept was a vastly improved announcing format, kinda like the original Monday Night football, where you have a lot more camaraderie and discussion than was traditional.

But I do think that the full size court allows for much more variety and strategy, and overall Dania (and Miami, if it existed) is a lot more enjoyable for me to watch.
