Funny. I dried out many years ago. AA helped me, because the meetings gave me somewhere to go on the nights I would have been sitting home, drinking.
When I first quit drinking, I kept smoking marijuana. I'd drive to an AA meeting sober/no marijuana, sit there and listen to their drinking stories, say the AA prayers, then smoke dope while I was driving home.
Believe me, whatever it took to get me off of booze, it was good for me. After THREE YEARS of smoking JUST marijuana and NOT drinking, I was running out of marijuana on a New Years Eve and decided it was time to quit weed, too. I've been many years now without booze or weed.
Funniest thing for me was that I mentioned my "pot only" strategy to another recovering alcoholic after I had quit everything, even marijuana. He said the marijuana-only method of quitting booze was so common, it was called "The Marijuana Maintenance Program."
Lots of people would have thought I was cheating, but whatever it took to help me quit drinking was OK with me.
