Scripps Employee Survey Hits

FTVLive has heard from countless Scripps employees that are pissed at the company and confused by exactly what the company is trying to do.

"I watched many of my friends get kicked to the curb, and I still can't figure out why?" said one Scripps staffer to FTVLive.

An Anchor, who still works at a Scripps station in a Bigger market, tells FTVLive she wants out. "When my contract is up, I'm out and I will never work for Scripps again," the Anchor said, adding, "There are many of us that feel this way."

Today, all the Scripps employees will be sent a link to a survey, that Scripps claims is being conducted by an outside company.

Scripps CEO Adam Symson sent out this internal email last week. It was obtained by FTVLive.

Colleagues:

A strong and resilient culture has always been part of Scripps’ ethos. Through each iteration of our company’s history, our people, our mission and our values have gotten us to the next waypoint in our journey. Our shared sense of purpose and framework for helping our employees succeed has been and will continue to be what makes Scripps special.

Over the past year, our culture has taken a hit. Employees across the company are experiencing tremendous change, and while the changes have been necessary, the process has been too difficult to understand, fraught with uncertainty and painful.

As we look now to rebuild our culture, I believe it is time to evaluate what we lost and how we want to move ahead. To that end, we want to hear your thoughts on the key leadership and cultural elements Scripps needs to be a great place to work and a company that thrives. We will start with a confidential all-employee survey. You’ll be asked questions about our values, your work environment, career growth opportunities and more.

You’ll receive a survey administered by McKinsey on Monday, Feb. 5. I ask that you take time to candidly share your thoughts. After the survey closes on Friday, Feb. 16, we will share our companywide results with all employees.

I hope you will participate. We need all voices to be heard for us to improve how we work together.

Adam Symson (he/him)

President and CEO

Symson writes in the email, "Over the past year, our culture has taken a hit," and while that is an understatement, the "hit" was self-inflicted.

One Scripps staffer reacted to the memo, "He (Symson) killed the culture by devaluing some of the most experienced people in his newsrooms (anchors), trying to get rid of live production and turn us into a newspaper on TV, and tossing our friends and coworkers to the curb in the name of a rather lame news initiative that no one outside of the corner offices in Cincinnati thinks is a good idea."

One of the Scripps employees who sent along a copy of Symson's email says they will not be taking part in the survey. "First, it won't change anything, and second, I wouldn't put it past the company to track who submitted the survey," the staffer said.

Time will tell if any change comes from this survey.

Stay tuned...
