As Vadim grazed on the plentiful grasses located between the Falls and Meadow, the stallion was contemplating his future. He had still not made it back to the Lagoon, despite being so close to it. None of his supposed brothers had come to him either. Vadim knew it wasn’t coincidence. They did not miss anything happening on the Crossing islands. He had been gone long enough now, that clearly they didn’t think he was coming back. Or perhaps they didn’t want him back. Either way, Vadim struggled with the fact the Lagoon had been his home for his entire life, but it no longer felt like it.
A scream caught Vadim’s attention, cutting through his muddled thoughts. Lifting his head, he held his breath and listened, expecting to hear it again. But there was nothing. With a snort, the stallion decided to go investigate, but at a leisurely pace. With it only being one cry, maybe it wasn’t anything too important, or even an altercation between lovers that he wanted no part of. But as he approached the Falls, it was only one fresh scent he picked up at the water’s edge along with a set of hoof prints on bank.
Lowering his head, Vadim got a drink first, before he turned where the scent lead off. He’d only taken a single step when he spotted the figure in the shadows. If he wasn’t so familiar with the Crossing, Vadim might not have noticed her. Lifting his head further now, ears erect, he gave a low nicker towards her. If she didn’t return it, or invite him closer, Vadim would go about his way and try to pretend he hadn’t come for anything else aside from a drink.
