She hadn't noticed his faltering steps. Vervain had been too busy laughing with her eyes closed in a blink in that moment. Even if she had noticed it, the girl would have likely thought nothing more than he had either misstepped or was making some sort of joke. Nephilim affirmed what she had said about her brother's wandering, which elicited another small smile. With eyes shining, the brindled maiden turned her face away from him and guided them toward the place she had in mind.

As they walked, Vervain wondered just how long the search for Castillon would take. How much longer would they be alone in each other's company to talk freely with no one to curb the conversation? How much longer would she have his attention? The thought made her wistful. The urge to take the scenic route was awfully tempting, but Vervain thought better of it. There was a point to his visit; he'd been seeking Castillon directly after all. Nephilim hadn't come to visit, though the thought that he might want to at some point sent a thrilling heat through the black mare.

Conversationally, the silver buckskin strolling at her side asks her a question. She allows a very small laugh to exit her mouth. It was more akin to a puff of air than a laugh with such a breathy expression. "Oh, gosh, Nephilim. You couldn't have asked me an easy question?" She jests with him, black strands of mane brushing the side of her neck when the girl glances at him and away. It was truly difficult to choose a favorite time of year in really the only home she'd ever known; she didn't count that stressful time when the whole herd had left the Prairie in her father's absence.

As the thoughts quickly passed through her mind's eye, Vervain slowed and looked out across the vast territory. She thought of the little animals that scurried when the weather was warm and those that disappeared when it chilled in the winter. She thought of the flowers that blossomed, grasses that grew taller than her knees, and the bees and bugs that crept among them. "I think. . ." A small smile lilts the tone of her voice, which sounded a little airy and disconnected as she rolled a memory over in her mind and examined it.

"I think my favorite time of year here would be that small moment between autumn's fading and winter begins to drift in. That first night when the frost comes and covers everything with tiny crystals that shimmer any way you look at them. It's just so pretty." Her words trail tenderly into the soft day still happening around them. Noticing the sudden quiet, Vervain glances bashfully at the silver-haired male next to her. A smile flits across her dark lips, and her words hurry on. "What about you? Do you have a favorite season in the places you've lived?"

Vervain
