When the young mare’s stark white face turned to look at him, observing him, Toland’s own gaze was pulled to her’s from the waterfall. A strange feeling began to melt over him under her scrutiny, making him stand a little taller and arch his neck a bit. Like he needed to look the part of a handsome stallion, rather than the curious colt that had climbed through the brush. When she decided to turn and approach him, the muscles tightened beneath his painted coat, and his heart quickened to a flutter. Was he supposed to say something? Announce his name and why he was here? Yet, words failed him. Stuck in his constricted throat so tightly, Toland didn’t bother to open his mouth.
When the stranger reached him, Toland expected her to exchange breaths with him. He extended his muzzle to her but was quickly rewarded with something else. Heat roiled across his skin as she lipped at his forelock instead, feeling as if he had somehow fumbled with his first greeting. Was this customary on the Crossing for this kind of behavior? Was he supposed to do something similar? He gave a curious blink of his eyes when she decided to pull away, still lost for words, but the young mare didn’t seem to mind. With a lighthearted laugh, she leaned forward again to lip at his hair once more. Only as she pulled away did Toland get to see why she laughed.
“Oh…I….er….” Toland tried to talk, but his stuttering was silenced as she finally offered her nose to exchange breaths. The young stallion didn’t deny her the cutesy, but was even more confused when she pulled her nose away only to step closer.
Grey ear tipping sidewards to the young mare as she stood so close to him, he peered back at her, trying to see what she was doing. By the tugging on his mane, it wasn’t hard to figure out. Especially as she commented on his accessories. “Toland.” he answered when she offered her name. “And I wasn’t very graceful, huh?” His cheeks were flaming with embarrassment, but he was glad that he had finally managed to get a few words out.
