licking long strands of black hair, a beast moved silently through the open expanse of land. Eyes that were tired blinked as large hooves moved over open soil and grass. Fall was quickly approaching, but wounds softly bled and grew infected with each passing day. It had barely been any time since he had faced Finley, but already the demon of the Lagoon was growing ill. Eyes that were normally full of rage were tired and held pain as infected hoof marks lined his frame from his neck back to his haunches. Finley had given him lasting wounds that day in the Peak and Lucifer had done his best to tune them out, but suddenly they were becoming too much.

Shaking his head with a sigh, the lumbering draft finally stopped near the falls. The rushing water hid the sound of a fearful whinny, but he paid no attention to it for a few beats. His ears flicked about as he listened to his surroundings, but soon enough the stallion figured he was all clear and moved behind the cascading water and up a thin trail. When he first arrived here after everything, Lucifer had searched and searched for a hiding place. It had taken him a day or two, but now? The stallion had his little oasis and he moved up into it, his amber eyes softly lowering to land upon a body that he had helped get here. Giving a faint whicker, Lucifer went in closer to the child before lowering his snout, giving her a few soft breaths of his own scent before lipping at her forelock.

This was all new to the black stallion, but something about this broken child had his full attention as he lipped at her and checked for injuries. It was not long after that when he turned away from her, his ears perked and listened to the outside world. With where they were in this safe den, Lucifer figured no one would find him. Yet, the black beast took his time listening before he let the child rise from her bed and lean on him, both of them taking slow and broken steps away from the cave and down to the lush grass of the Falls. She was young yet and should technically still be on milk, but Lucifer had no nurse mare and it made things a bit more difficult, even though the stallion did his best with this broken child.

As time went by, the black stallion and the foal grazed to their heart's content. It was with the sun sliding down in the distance and stars coming out to light the sky that had the black beast mellow enough to lay down in the tall grasses with the filly at his side. His amber eyes closed, but his ears remained alert as the two creatures rested, one healing from wounds suffered by the hands of the black beast and the other suffering from wounds he had earned. Yet… The story of these two was only beginning and Lucifer, believe it or not, held a streak of protectiveness to this young child.
