The sun hesitates

He follows her, thank god. She had been worried about breaking through his panic, and Rieva would not have been surprised if the black was too far gone, judging by the size of the thing chasing them. She had originally thought it was wolves, but dispelled that theory when she heard the footfalls of a single animal. Shortly after they began running in earnest, she dared to look behind her, and was shocked and invigorated to see a goddamn bear behind them.

Shit shit shit, she thought, feeling the black stallion’s shoulder at her hip and allowing him to push her onward, grateful for the boost. No wonder he had balked so hard on the hill. Rieva had struggled to imagine something that would terrify such a beastly, scarred stallion as this one, but now it made sense.

She doesn’t hear the bear anymore, and can’t tell if they’ve drowned out the sound of it under their own frantic footfalls or if it’s given up. She hadn’t gotten a good look at it, only enough to see what it was. She doesn’t know that it’s starving and desperate, or that its weakened state causes it to give up rather quickly. By the time Rieva feels comfortable enough to slow, they are nearly upon the beach.

Finally, with the air smelling of ocean but no waves yet in sight, Rieva comes to a stumbling halt. Her cream-and-white sides heave with great, violent breaths, and she cannot immediately speak. Under different circumstances, there would have been animosity between Rieva and this intruder into her home. As things stand, however, she doesn’t really care. She rolls one ghostly pale eye to look at him, and eventually turns her face to appraise him properly, but she says nothing. Her gaze shifts a few times to the path they’d stampeded through the woods, and she listens intently, but does not hear the bear. They appear to have made a successful escape.
