She was nice and that made Calder feel even more ridiculous to think he was capable of talking to her on his own. He flushed hotly as she told him it was nice to meet him, Calder of the Ridge, and he tucked his pink chin back to his broad chest as he tried to smother a bit of a boyish smile. Calder pulled himself together quickly enough, though not so quick she wouldn’t see the brief ripple of bashfulness across his face.

His brown ears pointed at her as she told him her name, Hush Hush, and he found his curiosity doubled. He wanted to tell her he thought it was a very pretty name, but his tongue suddenly felt far too thick and he wilted a little, losing the courage. Mentally he chided himself for it, but refocused quickly on the tall mare standing in the rain with him.

She’d asked him why he was here instead of home and Calder gave an awkward laugh, “Well, um, to tell you the truth Hush, I kind of wish I was back home right now.” He smiled briefly, wondering if he should have admitted that out-loud or not. Wasn’t a herd leader supposed to enjoy going out and about across the islands to bring more and more members to the territory? How could he expect prosperity to find him if he just explored all the hidden trails he and Oswald had found over the years or napped on the beach as he loved to do?

“But my brother and I just took over the territory, er, were-” He paused, frowning as he tried to think of the right word, then asked in its place “- bequeathed?” He seemed to accept that and continued with a slight nod, “We were bequeathed the territory by our father.” That sounded like the way a leader was supposed to talk, right?

Man he was so out of his depth here.

“Um, and I have to try and find horses who want to come live with us.” He concluded and knew that wasn’t how he should have worded it. Certainly there was a more elegant way to hint that he was looking for members to come live in the Ridge.

Calder blinked through the pattering rain at Hush, the first pretty girl he'd been up close to, and he imagined her beneath the Atlantis sun, or letting him show her the secret paths along the cliffsides that climbed up impossibly high into the jungles. His stomach felt like it had a whole flock of parrots suddenly taking flight off in it.

Calder blinked at Hush and again, felt like his tongue was swelling up, but he made himself say it quickly: “Are you trying to find a home?”
