A pale sun rose over the far horizon. Cautiously, its beams crept over the parched landscape, casting a low light over sand and striated rock before revealing the morning-dark umber of the stallion’s steady gaze. His figure remained motionless, save for the sway of hair in stray breezes. The watch continued, even as the copper of his coat became increasingly gilded with light as the sun progressed upward.
Helios’ gaze narrowed, hooding his eyes in the intensifying light, and swept across to where the herd lay some distance away. When the heat had ramped up for the warmer spring and summer months, the stallion had steeled himself. Yet as the year-old promise faded with the passing of spring, the chestnut’s mind had turned to the land’s borders once again.
The length of his pale tail lashed out, whistling like the ghost of a whip through the air, as the issue turned over and over again in Helios’ mind. How long would he allow the visits of strangers to clench at his gut with unease? How long would he let the currents of the world batter him about before something was to be done about it?
A forehoof lifted and subsequently returned to the earth in a soft stamp of tempered frustration. Even if someone promising did fill the third position and the ranks of the guard increased, Helios could not help but feel that more could yet be done to protect the Dunes. Could the four rulers of the desert island not find a way to work together? He had had that particular thought months ago. The Arabian breathed deeply, airborne sand stinging the soft skin of his nose.
In this new year of his reign, Helios vowed, would begin a new effort: to bring a sense of peace to Salem.
