People watch to see the Celebs and the clips of the winners so they know what to go see or buy.
You should know that our society is vast and with many interests, you are a wart on the butt of society. It doesnt pay attention to you (or me) either.
But if there wasn't interest, advertisers wouldn't buy the time and you in the media should know that its a waste of your time to say "THIS and THAT" aren't of interest to ME." 300 million eyeballs in the US and theya ll have money in their pockets.
The media is about attracting them and then selling them shit. Everyone on both sides of the tellie know this!
You also should know TV affiliates pay the entry fees and get a table at the show if they RSVP (which most probably don't unless they won a big one)...not for the meal or the plastic statue but for the promotional rights to call one of their shows "award winning" designed to increase the value of their program in their viewer minds, and get them to watch more loyally.
I won a NY Intnl Film Festival award and got the medal and the placque along with the photographer whose work on my production actually earned it. It looked nice on my resume for two more job applications, and honestly,I havent seen it since. Lemme think. 1980. That was 45 years ago. Definitely too dusty for bragging rights.
I got a little prestige at the station where I was working at the time and saved the ad they placed in TV Guide that month that had my name and an ad for my news series. I don't remember getting a raise for it nor did the General Manager come down from the corner office to congratulate me. Nor have I actually seen a copy of our work since I left that station 5 years later. Since I was no longer a reporter, I never put it on a tape during the ten years I was still in television.
So I sort of agree with you about how rather insignificant awards are but it felt good at the time and my station got some mileage out if it in return for paying me and the photographer for the 6 weeks we worked on it. Yawn.
How bout them CHIEFS, huh! We canceled our cable TV so wont see the next one since its on ESPN and we dont want to go to a local bar badly enough to get gussied up and go. Besides I dont drink anymore so that'd take all the fun about whooping it up in public. Just so long as we find out Patrick won again!
We have lots of shirts and on game days, we wear one, have a snack meal with family over, and have a small flag out for our neighbors to see our house is Chiefs Kingdom.
I actually never went to Arrowhead all the years I lived in KC but I consider myself an interested fan and if it's on TV I'll watch it.
