Vadim hadn’t meant to startle her, and as the pale mare rose in such a fashion on shaking legs and then stumbled, the stallion felt guilt twist in his gut. It took everything he had not to lurch forward in an attempt to catch her. Afraid that he would only cause more embarrassment on his behalf as well as scare her. Instead of looking at him, her pale blue eyes seemed to latch onto the flowers at his hooves, and Vadim had to swallow back a sigh. Maybe if he had been made into a smaller stallion, instead of such a large draft like his sire, he wouldn’t have been so imposing. Or perhaps it was the scars lining his body from his past that she couldn’t bare to look at.
“I didn’t mean to disturb you, Halla.” he said sincerely as she introduced herself. “I also don’t mean you any harm.” The words could just as easily be a lie, but Vadim hoped by the tone of his voice, she might realize that he meant it. “My name is Vadim and I’m from the Ba-…. The Shore.” Correcting himself at the last second, Vadim could still feel the pain radiate in his chest from nearly saying the Badlands.
“This territory is the Commons….” He started, unsure if she was aware or not. He couldn’t tell by her scent if she was new to the islands or not. “It’s not a great place to be any time of the year, but especially now during Fall.” Vadim could only imagine what the Lagoon would do to a pretty mare like her. What he would have done, seasons ago when he had been filth too. “Can I take you someplace safer…?” Perhaps he should have suggested the Shore, but after his near misspoke before, he was nearly afraid to say the name of his home again.
