Calder swallowed back his surprise at what he was told. Even though he had known his idea that Renvari continued to lead happily without him was a lie he told himself to keep the anxiety at bay, having the proof thrust in his face was unnerving. Worse yet, he couldn’t decide whether he was relieved or disappointed that he would now be forced to continue to live in the Ridge. Calder loved the Ridge and had very little interest in spending much time outside of its borders. But there was some sort of dark energy coming off the scarred stallion before him that told Calder he wasn’t going to love it here so much under its new leadership.

Too, would he ever see his parents again? Was that something he should even be worried or thinking about, considering he was a grown stallion at this point? Did he even want to see them after he’d failed them so terribly?

Calder huffed a small, frustrated sigh at himself, though it could be misinterpreted by his current company as directed at them and the situation they’d put him in. “Okay.” He said complacently.

Curiosity wriggled under his skin, though. Before he considered that he didn’t care much to continue having a conversation with this stallion, he found himself asking, “Why’d you want to be a leader?” He didn’t need to ask: Why the Ridge? Calder understood why anyone and everyone would love to live here. But he wondered… as someone who had just failed so spectacularly at being a leader, what was it like to choose that fate?
