Calder loved the Ridge. Most of the time he spent his days far inland, up the mountain, exploring his tucked away havens. There were paths worn by horses of the past that wound through tight squeezes - especially for a large boy like him - but they always opened up into the most beautiful areas. Having grown up in the Ridge, Calder felt there wasn’t a place among the land that he didn’t know, and he used this to his advantage to do everything he could to avoid the new regime of the Ridge.

He had been told to no longer be a shadow like he had once been, but Calder… oh boy, he was pretty dang scared of this guy that took over the Ridge. For now, while the leader was distracted leading things, he found his moments to sneak away down other paths and tried his very best to hide and not be involved in whatever was going on here.

It made him quite sad… but at the same time, he really only had himself to blame.

Which just made him sadder.

So, that day, Calder did something he really did not like to do. He left the Ridge - not permanently, he wasn’t brave enough to try and escape - and made for Crossing Isle. His hair was heavy, wet and stuck against his skin. He tried to shake himself, but only managed to scatter a bit of water and sort of move the giant mop of his mane off his neck. He blew a sigh and started trudging forward down the beach, deciding the more he moved, the more likely it was he’d dry faster.

(He did cast one nervous look behind him, like he’d suddenly see the large black beast of the Ridge chasing him down.)

He’d only walked a small way, certainly not enough to dry any, when he came across a dainty red and white mare. He came to a rather quick stop and was staring awkwardly at her, not exactly sure if he should say something or even what that something should be before she suddenly whirled around on him. Hello? He threw his boxy head up with brief surprise and even moved a step back, then felt silly for having been startled enough by her to have moved away from her.

“Uh… hi.” Calder said, swallowing thickly. “I didn’t… I wasn’t meaning to bother you or anything... I can… I can go and leave you be,” he offered, his nervousness already showing in the slight tremble of his voice and the way his eyes darted away from her before he consciously forced himself to look back at her again.
